Stinky Feet

My husband loves to tease our children about having stinky feet, whether they do or not. It’s become a joke in our house that when the kids start to say something about their day, my husband will respond with something like, “Was it because of your stinky feet?” Which always brings either giggles or eye rolls from our girls.

Some days, you deal with actual stinky feet. Okay, not actual feet, but people that act like stinky feet. You know what I’m talking about. Those people that make it very hard to maintain a good attitude. Those people that you just want to go, “You are testing the Jesus in me!”

We all deal with those types of people. They just stink up your day and drive you crazy.

So what does God say to do with these people?

Wash their stinky feet.

WHAT?! GROSS!

In John 13, Jesus washes the feet of his disciples. Literally stinky, dirty, disgusting feet that have been walking miles in mud and grime and whatever else. With nothing but love, he takes off the dusty sandals and cleans them.

But this isn’t the most amazing part of this story, the part that hits me the hardest and where I’m going with this whole piece, read John 13:11

He knew who would betray him

Of course Jesus knew who was going to betray him to the worst death imaginable. He knew who was the stinkiest feet among them. He knew the torture and hardship he would endure because of this person, and what did he still do? He still washed this man’s feet. Even though He knew it wouldn’t change things. Even though He knew that Judas would still betray Him, He still looked into his eyes and served him with love.

How beautiful is that kind of love? That kind of forgiveness? That kind of serving heart?

I want that kind of heart. One that will serve, even when betrayed. Forgive, even when it’s hard. I want to shine that kind of light and be different. To see beyond the stinky feet and show them the love of Christ. To be different.

The world says to hold a grudge, but God says to let it go. (Anyone else start singing Frozen there? Yeah, don’t be ashamed, you’re not alone and if you weren’t singing it before, I bet you are now.)

Christ died on the cross for you. To take everything you’ve done wrong and bear it upon Himself because He loves you that much. He forgives you that much. He also did it for the stinky feet people and we will never have to forgive them more than Christ has forgiven us for all the wrong that we’ve done in our lives.

If we remember how much we’ve been forgiven by the blood of Christ, it makes it easier to serve, love, and forgive, even to the stinky feet people.
