The Art of Being Still

I don’t know about you, but being still is HARD! I often find myself unable to just sit still. Sit in the quiet. I am nearly constantly moving. Whether it be cleaning while watching TV with my family. Listening to the Bible while creating graphics. Bouncing my leg while sitting in a work meeting. I have a hard time just sitting and doing nothing. And if I am sitting somewhat still, my mind wanders to what all that needs to get done, or new story ideas, etc. Now, if you add quiet within the mix, then I’m in trouble! Because the quiet is so loud!

Anyone else with me? Tell me I’m not the only one!

Now, I am working on this. My husband is trying to help me with it, especially when we are on vacation, that it is good to just relax and not have to always being on the go and doing something.

But I am a work in progress.

For example, last week, as I’m sure most of you know, Verizon had a huge outage that caused many of us to lose our phone access unless we were on Wi-Fi. Which made driving in the car a really quiet ride. Sure, I could’ve put on the radio, but I didn’t want to. I wanted to complain that my phone wasn’t working and that the car was too quiet. That I didn’t have something to do. That I couldn’t flip through to the song that I wanted to listen to.

And then God, in His wonderful way, immediately interrupted my ranting and said. “Hey, why don’t you talk to Me?”

Sucker punch.

I sat there and complained when I could’ve been spending time with my Father, which is something I truly need and need to put more priority on. How can I have a healthy and meaningful relationship if I don’t take time outside of reading my Bible to speak with Him? And then not just speak, but seek Him and listen.

And then this verse came to me.

Surrender your anxiety. Be still and realize that I am God…

Psalm 46:10 TPT

Only when we take a moment to stop moving, embrace the quiet, and sit with Him can we recognize the truth about God. No matter how crazy this world gets, and it is getting crazier, God’s perfect will will prevail and He is still on His throne.

Even Jesus took time away from everything to just be still and bask in the presence of our Father. What better example could we have?

And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw and He knelt down and prayed

Luke 22:41 NKJV

It shouldn’t take an outage of my phone to remind us, or rather have God remind us, to take time to truly be with Him. This isn’t about just reading the Word and checking that off our daily list, but taking time to speak with Him and commit time to Him.

Think about this. We spend hours surfing the web, watching TV, and other things that don’t necessarily have any true value. Could you set aside just 5 minutes in a day to be still for the Lord? 5 minutes may seem like a long time to just sit still, especially if you’re like me, but in that time see what you could discover about Him. About yourself. How much value can being still and quiet have on your spiritual life?

We need to remember and know that He is God! Who He is and what He can do. He is the creator of all things.

For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.

Colossians 1:16 NKJV

The Creator can calm our hearts, ease our minds and guide our lives into the right direction – if we just be still and take time in His presence.

Life will still come at us. Sometimes like a freight train. But when they do, when those worries come, we can take a moment in the quiet and lift them to God and let Him handle it.

If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers – most of which are never even seen – don’t you think He’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do His best for you?

God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.

Matthew 6:30,34

It’s will be a daily process. It won’t always be easy. It’s a change in our thoughts to focus on Him. To make an effort to set aside specific times for God. But with Him, we got this because we trust that He’s got this. This gives us Godfidence!
